Governor Biographies

LOCAL AUTHORITY GOVERNORS

Catherine Gater Newhouse - Chair of Governors, Clerk to Resources Committee, Co-opted Governor

Catherine has an MA in Materials science and an MSc in Science Communication and has specialised in European project management. She is currently working in equality and diversity at a Cambridge based international laboratory. She has one child at Thorn Grove. Catherine is passionate about science communication and education and has worked or volunteered at several labs, museums and science associations in the UK and abroad.

Catherine Barton - Vice-Chair of Governors, Local Authority Governor, Chair of School Improvement Committee

Catherine moved to Bishop's Stortford area in 2009 and has been part of the governing body at Thorn Grove since 2013. Her professional background is in local government, predominately as a project manager. She has a BA in Politics and a MSc in Public Management.

Sarah Lilly - Clerk to Thorn Grove Governing Body

Sarah Lilly has been Clerk to the Governing Body since July 2016. Sarah is also a governor at another local school.

 

CO-OPTED GOVERNORS

Rachel Foster - Resources Committee, Co-opted Governor

Rachel is a Software Consultant working with charity and non-profit organisations designing business processes that optimise their fundraising and supporter management capabilities. Rachel has joined Thorn Grove as a Co-opted Governor and has since taken an active role in the Resources Committee.

Russell Knight - Vice Chair of School Improvement Committee, Co-opted Governor

Russell works for the Prince’s Trust and works to support disadvantaged young people to turn their lives around and get them on the road to success. He is keen to work with local schools to help young people to get the best start in life.

Lara Lucas - Vice Chair of School Improvement Committee, Co-opted Governor

Lara joined as a Governor in 2016 and currently works in law for a bank based in London. She brings extensive expertise in the areas of risk management, policy and finance.

Shane Manning - School Improvement Committee, Co-opted Governor

Shane is a Digital Product Owner working on digital transformation projects within financial services. Shane’s background is in Legal practice, with a Law degree from Lancaster University and a post graduate diploma from the University of Law, Manchester. Shane moved to Bishop Stortford at the start of 2018 and joined Thorn Grove as a Governor shortly afterwards. He is also a Governor of another school.

 

PARENT GOVERNORS

Andrew Bennett - Resources Committee, Parent Governor

Andrew is a parent at the school.

Michelle Gowlett - Chair of Resources Committee, Parent Governor

Michelle is a qualified accountant and works in finance and operations in a charity supporting young people into further education, employment or enterprise. She has previously worked for many years at a professional services firm and at Hertfordshire County Council. She enjoys running, reading and baking cakes and has two children at Thorn Grove.

Andrew Pooley - Vice Chair of Resources Committee, Parent Governor

Andrew moved to Bishop’s Stortford in 2014, and has one child at Thorn Grove. He currently works for an insurance company in London, looking after compensation and benefits for the UK.  Prior to that he has worked in a number of HR roles in various sectors. He has a degree in Psychology from the University of Nottingham. He enjoys keeping fit and listening to music. He became a Governor in May 2017 is a member of the Resources Committee

 

STAFFING BODY GOVERNORS

Peter Luck - Headteacher

Peter is Headteacher at Thorn Grove and joined the school in September 2016. He was previously assistant headteacher at Dewhurst St. Mary Primary School in Cheshunt, a good school with outstanding features.

Jayne Lilley - Deputy Headteacher

Jayne was appointed as Deputy Headteacher in September 2018, joining us from Burnt Mill Academy Trust, where she was a Lead Practitioner for Creativity and English.  She was based at Little Parndon Primary School, where her support led to the school being placed in the top 20% of schools nationally for student progress.  Jayne believes the curriculum should be taught in an engaging and stimulating way which promotes a love of learning.  

Joss Loveday - Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Coordinator

Joss has been at Thorn Grove in various guises for a number of years; as a mum, a supply teacher and now as Inclusion Co-ordinator. Her job is to ensure that pupils receive the education they require whatever their needs and to co-ordinate this with parents, teachers, teaching assistants, educational psychologists, NHS services and the pupil concerned. We have a team of dedicated professionals who seek to develop pupils academically and socially. She sits on the School Improvement Committee and informs the members of latest government reform and feedback initiatives undertaken at school.
