Writing

At Thorn Grove, we strive to create a positive writing culture and to enthuse, inspire and equip our pupils to become skilled and fluent writers.  We want our children to develop their vocabulary understanding, write in a range of different genres and continuously develop their spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.

Our approach to the teaching of writing is based on "The Write Stuff" by Jane Considine.  This research-informed approach allows children to apply basic skills, vocabulary and grammar knowledge to write effective sentences, that are full of impact and keep the reader interested. It is introduced though the 'Writing Rainbow".

Over their time at Thorn Grove, children will write a range of genres focused on high-quality texts. The chosen texts and genres cover a wide range of themes, including cultural, social and physical diversity.

Spelling

From Year 2, children have regular spelling lessons to build on their phonics knowledge.  They continue to break down spellings into the smallest units of sound and cluster them into syllables in order to read and write words efficiently. Through adult-led discussion and investigation, children become more secure in their knowledge of English orthography as well as the morphology and etymology of the English language.

To help support the teaching of spelling, children in Years 2 – 6 have access to Spelling Shed. This is a game-based tool that can be used at home to boost children’s confidence in spelling. Children play the games and practise their spellings in a fun, interactive way.

Please speak to the class teacher if you have any questions about accessing Spelling Shed.
